The Numbers
According to the 2016 Market Outlook , the amount of passenger traffic was up approximately 7.4% and capacity was up 6.7% in 2015 alone. In the end, that’s a record breaking 80% word wide. Because of lower gas prices, and varied aircraft efficiencies, airlines expected net profits of $35 billion dollars in 2015. Since then, key trends in aviation have skyrocketed and analysts expect to see this progression increase in the coming years.
Over the next 20 years in the field of aviation, the big gaints of aerospace Airbus and Boeing have forecasted that the industry will need approximately 45,000 new airplanes. With the diversity of the aviation field growing, new planes are needed to make up for the products and people being transported to more remote places.

The Growth
With the globalized demand escalating tremendously who will create technical publications to build, repair, dispatch, and control all of these planes? YOU, that’s who! The demand is nearly tripling over the next 20 years for aerospace technical publications and Design.

The Importance
Nowadays, many of us are fond of travelling in airplanes may be for getting into office or for tourism. While sitting in the terminal or from the window of the airplane, everybody in and around the place might have noticed the hectic activity which goes around the airplane to prepare the flight for on bound or receive an arriving aircraft. Those people who are walking around the planes are carrying out some activity, according to the information’s and instructions which are laid down in a maintenance manual. It’s really astounding, isn’t it?
Nevertheless to say, aviation is one of the most extensively documented domains and there are information’s and instructions clearly specified for each and every activity done in and around the aircraft. Even the non-technical activities like securing and picketing aircraft, towing aircraft, cleaning and washing aircraft, operating ground support equipment, removal of troop seats or configuration for patient stretchers and serving in-cabin refreshments to passengers – they also have instructions to operate around!
The main reason for the precise nature of the information’s and instructions is due to the insignificantly important safety traits of owning and operating an aircraft. Airplane operators, manufacturers and supervisory body are always deemed responsible for the safety and security of the people who operate and travel in airplanes. Every category of airplane like Commercial, Cargo and Even military made by any manufacturer in any country today, there are very strict design, operations and maintenance guidelines imposed by the Aviation Authority of the particular country. All of these guidelines have progressed over and done with experience and either originate from or are aligned to the Federal Aviation Authority or European Aviation Authority Rules and regulations.
Such guidelines and regulations ensure that the aircraft manufacturers create well thought-out procedures for each and every activity associated with the operation and maintenance of their respective aircraft.
It is absolutely clear that, there are noticeably laid out standards and instructions for creating and allocating these procedures. With this it is ensured that there is a negligible gap of slackness for the person who is deeply involved in aviation as Aviation Technical Writer.

The role of the Aviation Technical Writer/Illustrator
Aviation maintenance calls for three types of Publications which are very much required to operate and to maintain: Operational, Maintenance and Materials Publications can also be known as “Health and Wealth of any Aircraft”. As an Aviation Enthusiast and worked on various types of aircrafts like Commercial Transport aircrafts, Helicopters and Fighters, Let me provide you a sight into this practice which in some way is a relatively noble profession that provides the individual with knowledge, discipline and the inspiration to achieve the excellence in this field.
It is said that the person who is creating Technical Publication for maintaining the aircraft should “Put himself in the shoes of the aircraft technicians” who are going to use the manual for maintenance and servicing of the aircraft. I can say by my experience that the manuals are nothing but the Bible of any aircraft, if followed properly it will save the life and if not followed it will ….?.
From the description above, you would have already guessed that since the writing in the Aviation domain is inherently a very responsible one. That is very true and particularly so since the individual is responsible for the safety of the aircraft. But there is nothing to be worried about- the quantum of knowledge that has to be imbibed, the quality standards which need to be adhered, the language of content used in publication as well as the writing tool to be learnt are all very clearly specified.
Training for the ambitious aviation technical writers continues throughout your career – Any aviation-related profession demands that you continually train to keep knowledge levels concurrent in all work aspects including product information, instructions, standards, and procedures.
Thorough knowledge of standard maintenance practices, safety and precautions while working on aircraft are an absolute must. Be the First person and Gear Head – Understand how equipment is assembled and how machinery components fit together and are disassembled. Develop and maintain an ability to interpret engineering drawings, reports and generate maintenance instructions from them.
There are certain publication standards which should be used and adhered for creation of these maintenance manuals such as ATA100, ATAiSpec2200, S1000d and ASD STE. There is once again a choice of different sections of maintenance manuals with respect to competencies like Technical Writer (Author) and Illustrator. As every one of us is living in a digital world and the paper world is going to be obsolete in the coming days, it is utmost important everybody should be acquainted with latest technology that is the electronic revolution.
